Setting up your Gmail on Outlook

Allowing Less Secure Apps

Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

  • The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
  • The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
  • Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird

If you want to change your account security settings to allow these apps despite the risks, use the following steps:

Use the following steps to ensure that IMAP is enabled on your Google account:

  • Sign in to your Google account, if not already
  • Click on the gear icon on the top right and go to Settings
  • Go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab
  • Under "IMAP Access", make sure that "Enable IMAP" is selected.

  • Go to File
  • Click on "Add Account".

  • Select "E-mail Account"
  • Click "Next"

  • Select "Manually configure server settings or additional server types"
  • Click "Next"

  • Select "Internet E-mail"
  • Click "Next"

User Information:

  • Your Name: e.g. Jane Smith
  • E-mail Address: e.g. jane.smith@example.com

Server Information:

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

Logon Information:

  • User Name: e.g. jane.smith@example.com Password:
  • Checked the "Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)".
  • Click "More Settings..."

  • Go to the Outgoing Server Tab
  • Select "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"
  • Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"

  • Go to the Advanced Tab
  • Enter the following information:
  • Incoming server (IMAP): 993
  • Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL
  • Outgoing server (SMTP): 465
  • Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL
  • Click "Ok"
  • Click "Next"
